Collect Rocks, Not Stress

Writer's picture: Contributing WriterContributing Writer
A man crouches by a forest stream, deep in thought. Sunlight filters through trees, casting a serene, green-lit ambiance.

Collecting rocks. It’s surprisingly effective for calming the mind. It forces you to pause, focus, and engage with the world around you in a way that feels refreshingly simple. Instead of rushing or overthinking, you’re crouching down, squinting at the ground, and weighing the merits of a smooth pebble versus a glittery quartz. That deliberate act of attention pulls your thoughts out of chaos and into the present moment.

Rocks also remind us of the absurdity of our daily stresses. When you hold a rock that’s millions of years old, it becomes clear that whatever is keeping you up at night might not be as catastrophic as it feels. After all, this rock survived eons of earthquakes, erosion, and possibly a dinosaur stepping on it. Surely, you can survive an awkward text exchange.

It’s worth noting that moderation is important. You don’t need to fill your home with enough rocks to concern your neighbors. A handful of carefully chosen pieces will do the trick. Let them serve as quiet reminders of the earth’s stability and your ability to find beauty in the small, enduring things.
