In Other News: Llamas at the Airport

Nearly half of U.S. airport travels have reported some stress related to air travel —which makes sense. Long lines, worry about missing flights, tight connections and middle seats are all sources of traveler stress.

Oregon's Portland International Airport, has decided to help these stressed out travelers feel a bit better. As you might have guessed, they've introduced llama therapy.

On the surface, this might seem a bit unusual. Actually, it is unusual, even well below the surface. But apparently, it's working. Research has shown that animal-assisted therapy can impact mental health by reducing anxiety and boosting overall well-being. Spending time with therapy animals releases endorphins, which can improve mood and help people feel more positive and relaxed. Additionally, animals can bring people together, encouraging conversations and helping foster a sense of community, even among strangers.

The airport has partnered with Mountain Peaks Therapy Llamas & Alpacas to bring these wonderful animals into the airport to provide comfort and distraction for passengers navigating the often stressful experience of air travel. Here's how it works.

  • Scheduled Appearances

Every few weeks, people will see llamas at the airport. The therapy animals make appearances, creating a calm, friendly atmosphere, helping travelers to relax before or after their flights.

  • Yup, They're Certified

The llamas and alpacas are specially trained for therapy work, meaning they are accustomed to interacting with a variety of people in busy, crowded environments.

  • Interaction Encouraged

Passengers are encouraged to pet and interact with the animals, which has been shown to release mood-boosting hormones like oxytocin, decrease cortisol (the stress hormone), and reduce blood pressure.

Why Llamas and Alpacas?

Why not? While therapy dogs are commonly used in airports, llamas and alpacas are less typical and can spark more curiosity and delight among passengers. Their unexpected presence adds an element of surprise and joy, which can help to further alleviate stress. Llamas and alpacas are known for their gentle, calm demeanors and have been successfully used in therapy settings like hospitals and schools.

The llama therapy program at Portland International Airport has been well-received, with many travelers expressing positive feedback. The animals offer an unexpected and welcome diversion, particularly for families with young children or individuals with travel anxiety.

Good job Portland!
