The Personal Puzzle, an Art Invitation

3D pink puzzle piece on a turquoise background

The Personal Puzzle art invitation is a creative activity designed to help individuals explore their identity, emotions, relationships, and personal experiences. This exercise can be used in both individual and group therapy settings.

In my practice, I usually do this in the first session with a client. I ask them to create a puzzle that best explains them. It's meant to kind of be an icebreaker and I find it be very effective. Here's an example.

The Personal Puzzle art invitation is a fun and effective way to start the therapeutic relationships with new clients.

The Personal Puzzle represents the idea that each person is made up of different "pieces" that together form their unique identity. Participants are invited to reflect on and express various aspects of themselves, such as personal values, past experiences, current challenges, and aspirations. The activity provides a tangible way to externalize and organize complex emotions or thoughts, fostering self-awareness and insight.

There are several therapeutic benefits to this art invitation.

  • Self-Exploration: Helps individuals understand and express complex feelings.

  • Organization: Assists in organizing fragmented thoughts and experiences into a cohesive whole.

  • Communication: Facilitates deeper conversation between therapist and client.

  • Empowerment: Gives participants a sense of control and creativity in visualizing their journey.

The Personal Puzzle art invitation is a meaningful and versatile therapeutic tool. This activity not only fosters personal insight but also facilitates open communication and strengthens the therapeutic relationship.
