Why Finding the Right Therapist is Super Important (part 1)
Finding the right therapist is one of the most important steps in a person's mental health journey. A good match can greatly impact the effectiveness of therapy. It's the key to effectively navigating the journey toward healing, self-awareness, and emotional growth.
Research consistently finds that the quality of the therapeutic relationship accounts for 25-30% of the variance in therapeutic outcomes, which makes it one of the strongest predictors of success across different treatment modalities and disorders.
Different therapists have unique approaches—some may specialize in cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), while others focus on psychodynamic techniques or mindfulness. Aligning with a therapist whose style resonates with your needs ensures you feel heard, understood, and supported. It also allows for a collaborative process where both parties work toward meaningful goals.
If you break your arm and need a doctor to repair it for you, it's objectively less important to have an excellent rapport with the doctor. Sure, it's a "nice to have," but, ultimately, if the doctor and you don't have compatible personalities, it's not a big deal.
Conversely, if you have anxiety and work with a mental health professional with an incompatible personality, getting an effective outcome could be difficult. Therapy can involve discussing sensitive, deeply personal topics. If you don’t feel comfortable with your therapist’s demeanor, it may be harder to open up, leading to slower progress.
How does a person find the right therapist? Referrals and online therapist directories are typically how someone gets matched. However, these tools can be inefficient and often times don't take into account the intangibles that ultimately create a good match. A strong therapeutic relationship is built on trust, understanding, and compatibility. How do you know if you're going to trust a therapist you find online? Or, even a therapist referred by a friend?
In part 2 of this blog series, we'll look at some tips you can use to help get matched with a therapist that's the right fit for you.
