Why Your Fish Might Be the Most Stable Relationship in Your Life

Writer's picture: Contributing WriterContributing Writer
Silhouette of a person facing a large fish tank, with a single fish inside. Dramatic lighting casts shadows in a minimalist setting.

Your fish might be the most stable relationship in your life, which says a lot about both of you. Unlike every emotionally unavailable person you’ve ever texted at 2am, your fish never leaves you on read. They don’t pull away when you get too attached. They exist in a state of unwavering, neutral presence. They just circle their tiny universe with the kind of quiet, detached commitment most humans can only aspire to.

They require nothing but food and occasional water maintenance, which is more than can be said for your high-maintenance friendships, your boss’s ever-changing expectations, or your ongoing existential crisis. Your fish has never once expected emotional labor from you. They don’t need validation. They don’t want to "talk about us." They don’t even care if you have your life together, which, let’s be honest, is why you find them so comforting.

The best part? You can tell yourself they recognize you. Maybe they do, maybe they don’t. Maybe that excited swim to the top of the tank is pure affection, or maybe they just think you’re food. Either way, they’re still there. Quiet. Undemanding. Unbothered by your flaws. A perfect, emotionally distant companion.
